Pregnancy things people never talk about #9: Acid refluxes and heartburns

You may or may not regurgitate in your sleep. I mean, not in your sleep, you’ll wake up just half a second before the contents of your stomach reaches your mouth. Cause seriously, you could choke on your own gastric acids, and that’s not something you’d want.

I’m suffering from heartburns quite often nowadays. I guess it’s the lack of space that’s causing it, and I’m not very happy about it. If I wanna eat something, I need to go pee just to get a little room in my stomach.

Week #27: Things you do in Portugal while pregnant

  1. Getting pills for heartburn. After 2 days of heartburn a week before we went to Portugal, I was sure it was over, but I was oh-so-wrong. So we went to a pharmacy to get something for it, but the lady behind the counter didn’t understand heartburn or acid reflux (I’m pretty sure you take the same medicine for those conditions), but when Christian pointed to my belly and said it was something you could get while being pregnant and that the throat hurt, she said: “Fire!” and we all nodded. And then I got something with a picture of a stomach and she said it was safe to use while being pregnant.
  2. Standing in line. After a day in Portugal we needed to get something for breakfast (as the hotel breakfast was expensive and not so good) and went to the grocery store. It smelled like fish and chlorine, and had the longest line I’ve ever seen in a grocery store before. I mean, it was the same as standing in line at IKEA. Or maybe even worse. Anyway, while standing there a man suddenly urged me to go to some other line, cause I was pregnant. And there, over the cash register, was a sign that said that it was a quick checkout for old, disabled and pregnant people. Seriously amazing. I didn’t go there though, cause I didn’t feel like going infront of all the others standing in line, and there was only one woman before me, and she even offered me to go before her because she hadn’t noticed that I was pregnant.
  3. Glares. Every now and then I noticed that the portugese women were staring at my belly. I found it a little bit strange, but then again, they probably wondered how the whale managed to get that far from the river Tejo.
  4. Mazel tov! While waiting for the bus in Sintra we met a couple from Israel. They gave us a Mazel tov for getting married, and it really made me happy for some reason.
  5. Toys “R” Us. As the childish couple as we are we had to stop by the Toys “R” Us to check out the goodies. We ended up at the Babies “r” Us section and bought a breast pump and pacifiers.
  6. Standing in line, part 2. There was a long bench filled with people while waiting in line for the bus in Sintra. I was stading a few metres away pondering if I should sit down or not when a man suddenly asked if I wanted to sit, and got up. At the same time the whole bench cleared cause everybody was wondering the same thing. It was amazing. And embarassing. At the same time.
  7. Waddling up narrow streets. And lots of. Both waddling and narrow streets.
  8. Not standing in line at the airport. There was a strike two days before we were going home, so the airport was crowded with people. I tried to check in at one of those self-service check-in kiosks, but it wanted a number I didn’t have, so I asked a woman who worked there. She couldn’t help. So I asked a man standing at the check in. He just looked at me, and let the whole family first in line. I LOVE my belly! ;)
  9. Running all around the airport for the tax free. Well, running and running, more like waddling in a hurry, but still. When we finally found the right place the lady behind the counter couldn’t speak too much English, so she spoke mostly in Portuguese, which I’m not too familiar with. She wondered what the pacifiers were. When I tried to explain to her in English, she mumbled something in Portguguese and motioned them to her ears, wondering if it was earplugs. When she finally understood what they were it was over to the breast pump. She examined the box, and luckily there was a picture of how to use it on one side, so I didn’t have to explain that. Fun.
